Why Is My Water Heater Making Noise?

Popping, rumbling, or banging from the tank usually means sediment. Here's what to do about it.

Why Is My Water Heater Making Noise?

A noisy water heater is common, and the sound often tells you what is going on inside the tank. Most noises are not dangerous, but they are worth understanding.

Popping and rumbling

This usually means sediment has settled on the bottom of the tank. Water trapped under the sediment boils and pops as it heats. The buildup forces the unit to work harder, raises energy use, and shortens its life.

Banging or knocking

Rapid knocking can come from water pressure changes, a failing element, or scale on the heating surfaces. If it appears suddenly, it is worth having checked.

Hissing or sizzling

A sizzling sound near the tank can indicate a small leak dripping onto a hot surface, which should be inspected right away.

What you can do

  • Flush the tank to remove sediment, about once a year in hard-water areas.
  • Check the temperature setting and the anode rod.
  • Have the unit inspected if noises persist or come with leaks or inconsistent hot water.

Sediment is also a factor in water heater repair and can shorten the life of the unit. If your heater is older and noisy, replacement may make more sense. Call (800) 390-6351 to discuss your options.
